Opening the Door | Episode 4: Positioning Art Across Local and Global Markets

Artists create work that speaks true to their environment, work that unpacks nuances from their local context. However, building a global audience requires an entirely different kind of fluency and sensibility. This session is a candid conversation about what it takes to build a global presence as an artist rooted in African soil, and why doing so with intention, care and on your own terms matters more than doing so quickly, or chasing trends. 

The session will feature established artists who have navigated this terrain themselves and have scaled their practice to global audiences. 

The conversation will touch on:

• How international curators, collectors and institutions actually discover African artists — the specific channels, networks and pathways that shape who gets seen right now.

• Positioning your practice and personal narrative for an international audience: framing your story, context and identity without flattening your work into a trend or a token.

• The ethics of visibility: presenting your practice globally without losing authorship, context or integrity.

• Speaking to two audiences at once: adjusting your artist statement, image selection and framing for an international reader while staying legible and true to a local one.

• What international galleries, fairs and residencies are actually looking for from African artists at the moment, and how to separate a genuine opening from a passing trend.

• Honest lessons and feedback from artists who've built real international followings — what worked, what they'd do differently, and the etiquette of working across borders and markets.

Opening the Door | A Workshop Series To Share Access and Insight

This series responds to a persistent gap: access to the inner workings of the art world. For many emerging practitioners, the industry remains opaque, largely defined by unspoken rules, informal networks and great uncertainty around how or where to begin.

‘Opening the Door’ is a 6-part series structured to address this directly. Each session brings participants into close conversation with established professionals across the local and Pan-African art ecosystem . The intention is not to generalise or simplify, but to offer specific, experience-based insight into how artists can better position themselves in order to create a successful and sustainable career in the arts.

The full programme draws on five years of research conducted by Art School Africa, identifying the primary barriers faced by emerging art practitioners from Africa. These sessions translate those findings into practical, open dialogue where questions can be asked directly and answers given on the spot.
